Calcium is a critical nutrient for all the cucurbit corps, cantaloupe, watermelon and other melons that are commercial crops. Low calcium levels in the fruits can result in blossom end rot, early softening or glassiness appearance of the fruit while still immature.
The vast majority of calcium is held within the leaves and stems, and relatively low amount is translocated to the fruits. While calcium is required for the root and shoots development, especially at the pre-flowering stage, calcium availability is critical during the fruit development stage. It is common to maintain application of calcium nutrient throughout the growing season right through to early fruit maturation stage to build up calcium levels in crop tissues, maximizing fruit quality and storability.
Hi-Cal liquid calcium is an excellent source of readily available calcium for these crops. As melons require calcium throughout the crop development period, it is important that H-Cal liquid calcium is applied throughout the growth period.
